Deconstructing a Girl Talk Song

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Deciphering samples is a skill that every DJ and producer hones in order to boast when that original song comes on. Ever since a few cats took the art of sampling and went crazy with it, it’s been harder and harder to breakdown. Take Girl Talk for instance; despite the pop value of every song used in his collages, bet you can’t name every single one. And furthermore, how does this patchwork Lego set of beats and pieces actually come together to form a coherent track? Thanks to Wired Magazine, there’s a translation for folks who consider themselves more on the visual tip. A deconstruction of 30 seconds of a the Girl Talk Song ‘What It’s All About’ reveals 35 samples assembled to create that signature dancefloor crack sound. Great visualization via Wired. The Current and the Walker Art Center present Rock the Garden – Saturday, June 20, 2009.

From MPR: The Current

Featuring The Decemberists, Calexico, Yeasayer, and Solid Gold.

The Decemberists have carried their ambitious, theatrical pop to new heights with the critically acclaimed 17-song rock opera, The Hazards of Love. Onstage, Meloy’s captivating story-songs are matched by the band’s consummate showmanship. Calexico are restless musical adventurers, mining the expansive landscapes and histories of the American Southwest; their latest, Carried to Dust, has been hailed as a fresh burst of experimental folk-pop. Trafficking in what they call “Middle Eastern-psych-pop-snap-gospel,” the Brooklyn-based Yeasayer merges spirituals and synthesizers in propulsive, polyrhythmic songs; they conjure ancient traditions while looking toward an alternately bleak and bright future in songs such as “2080,” which put the band on numerous critics’ radar. Jump-starting the Garden party are local electro-rockers Solid Gold, who are buzzing and busting worldwide. During a recent UK tour, NME described their hit “Get Over It” as “exquisite spectral disco and a slow-burn favourite in the making.”

Details:

With a new stage set-up, concertgoers can spread out on the Walker’s grassy hillside overlooking the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Enjoy the substance and shimmer of four of indie rock’s brightest stars–The Decemberists, Calexico, Yeasayer and Solid Gold.

Between sets, enjoy live broadcasts and music from The Current’s DJs, stroll through the world-famous sculpture garden, and sample an expanded mix of food, beer, and other refreshments for sale. This is an all-ages, rain-or-shine party.

“Go Skateboarding Day” – Sunday, June 21, 2009

Date: June 21, every single year.

What It’s All About: On June 21 skateboarders around the globe will celebrate the pure exhilaration, creativity, and spirit of one of the most infuential activities in the world by blowing off all other obligations to go skateboarding. OK, most skateboarders do this every day of their lives, but this is just one more reason to blow off your television/computer/video games and go skateboarding!

Skateboarders everywhere will show their love and support for skateboarding by holding fundraisers, contests, protests nad demos. They’ll skate across cities, gather in skateparks, stream into their local skate shop and some will even revel in the solitary act of skateboarding alone at their favorite spot, all bringing together the skateboarding community in the grind heard around the world.

The History: Go Skateboarding Day (GSD), held on June 21 every year, is the official holiday of skateboarding. The holiday began June 21, 2003 as an excuse for skateboarders to make skateboarding their top priority. Go Skateboarding Day began with a few simple skate sessions and bar-b-ques held in skateboarding’s unofficial capital, southern California.

Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC), Go Skateboarding Day gives passionate skateboarders as well as those who are simply inspired by skateboarding, the opportunity to drop everything and get on a skateboard. GSD is a cooperative of decentralized events that take place around the globe. Skateboard retailers, manufacturers, skateparks, distributors, organizations and individuals of all colors, creeds, and attitudes hold skateboarding events to celebrate the holiday. Skateboarders around the world create their own events and traditions to celebrate skateboarding.

Go Skateboarding Day originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face; to show the world what skateboarding is really all about; to reclaim our culture; and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. In the years since that first celebration, the holiday continues to grow, but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding!

Familia is gathering a clan to ride the streets in honor of this celebration:
